To the father of Nick,
I am a retired Army Ranger with 15+ yrs of service. I'll happily answer your questions..contact me csmith_214@swbell.net and you are RIGHT with your assumption, you cannot join the Army and go straight into Rangers.

Comments:

The recruiter is full of it you cannot sign up for the rangers just like that. Many requirements must be fulfilled first. A soldier must already be trained in an army mos and have completed jump school to be considered. Still interested? Get a cool Airborne shirt here -

It is as the other poster has said...You have to already be in the Army before you can even apply for Ranger School. Once your son is approved, and he has finished Jump school, and RIP (Ranger Indoctrination Program)this is the phase where he is tested physically and mentally to see if he is Ranger material. Once all this is finished he would attend Ranger School. It would be better I think to finish ROTC first, then apply for Airborne and Ranger Schools (He will need to send in a 4187 Request Form for EACH School). Yes it will be in his best interest (career wise) if he can get his Rager Tab, I believe that all Officers are given the chance to go to Ranger School If they have an 11B Infantry MOS (JOB). Im not positive on that, but I believe that is the case. As for Rank, unless he is due for a promotion, he would probably keep the same rank upon completion of the school. That being said he would get points toward a promotion when he finished school.
